Layering is a skill, not an accident. Four foolproof formulas plus the fabric rules that keep every layer looking intentional.
The golden rules
- Thin to thick: base layers hug, outer layers structure.
- Each layer visible: let hems, collars and cuffs peek out — hidden layers are wasted layers.
- Mix textures: cotton + denim + wool keeps the eye moving.
- Three is plenty: beyond three layers you need a very good reason.
Four foolproof formulas
- Tee + overshirt + puffer vest — the casual uniform, endlessly repeatable.
- Turtleneck + blazer + wool coat — boardroom to bar without changing.
- Hoodie + denim jacket + long coat — streetwear grows up, stays cool.
- Shirt + sweater vest + trench — the academic edge, very 2026.
Stylist tip: step back and squint at the mirror. If the silhouette reads as one clean shape, the layers are working; if it’s a blob, remove the middle one.
